Commentary

This charcoal was kindly donated to us by Gretl. We contacted Wegmans directly and found out that this charcoal is manufactured by Royal Oak. The size distribution of the pieces was pretty good. We only had a five pound bag to work with, but it seemed to contain its share of larger pieces. The chips and dust came in at about 12% of the bag by weight which is a little bit better than average. We did find a dirt clod and one piece of uncarbonized wood. The lump took 3 sheets of newpaper to light in our chimney starter test, which is less than average. (The easiest to light lumps take 2 sheets, hardest take 7.) The smell of the lump was mild, pleasant hardwood smoke.

We didn't have enough of a sample (which was our fault for not asking for a 10 pound sample) to test the maximum burn temperature. It seemed to burn fairly hot based on the vent settings to get it to burn at 450 degrees for our burn time test, however. Burn time results were average, and ash production was also average. For more information you may wish to read our review of Royal Oak lump charcoal for which we were able to do a more complete review.

And since this is the same charcoal as Royal Oak, we give Wegmans charcoal the same Highly Recommended rating.

Statements From The Bag

"Clean, Hot, Longlasting"

"Lump charcoal is made by partially burning wood to remove moisture and oils that cause smoking. It is preferred for its quick, even, hot fire. For best results in igniting the charcoal, uase a good quality starter fluid, and allow it to burn off completely."

"Dear Customer,
Every day we intend to give you our best. if this charcoal isn't all you expected it to be, we'll cheerfully refund your money. It will help us respond to your comments or questions if you return the package. Danny Wegman"
