Commentary

NOTE: This charcoal is no longer carried by People's Woods. It has been replaced by their "Nature's Own Chunk Charcoal" and you can find a review of this new charcoal here on the Lump Charcoal Database.
This charcoal was sent to us by Charlie Breen who picked it up at Peoples Wood. (See contact information below.) It isn't listed on their website, but you should be able to call them and ask them about it. Charlie was told that this charcoal is made by a company named Malloy (or sounds like it) and comes from either Tennesee or Kentucky. Since there is no brand name on the bag, we are calling this "Peoples Generic" for now.

The bag of charcoal we received seems to have a pretty good distribution of sizes. Lots of large and medium pieces and not to great an amount of chips and dust. We haven't been weighing the chips and dust up until we thought to do it for the review previous to this one, so we don't have a scale to go on for comparison, but as you can see, the sorted picture shows that the amount is not excessive compared to many other brands. The dust/chips weighed 2 pounds 3.5 ounces, or about 11 percent.

Ash production was low, but boy, were we surprised by the burn time. This charcoal is not dense. In fact, the volume of 6 pounds of this charcoal was greater than the volume of 6 pounds of Cowboy. So we expected it to burn hot and fast. Well, it did burn hot, but boy did it burn slow! The three pound sample we burned had a high burntime compared to other brands we have tested. We were so surprised, that we repeated the burn test with similar results. So this rather destroys the myth that dense always equals long-burning.

The charcoal was easy to light, 2.5 sheets of newspaper in our chimney starter test. It had a pleasant smell that you would expect from American hardwoods.

If you can buy this charcoal from Peoples Woods locally, it's a bargain at $8.95 for 20 pounds. Even if you have to order your charcoal online, this would be a great choice. We give this charcoal our Recommended rating.

12/03/05 UPDATE: The mystery has been solved. People's Woods have been bought by A. J. Martin, Inc. and they are indeed open for business.
