Commentary

This lump comes to us from Argentina, being imported and distributed by B&B charcoal. It has a pleasant mild smoke, which we consider to be a good thing, allowing you to add smoke as you see fit with smoking woods. The smoke has a slight perfume to it, which we also consider to be a good thing. The distribution of sizes is good, with an average amount of chips and dust. It was relatively easy to light, taking 3 sheets in our chimney starter test.

Something new that we are introducing with this review is a test of burn time and ash production, when possible. The burn time was fairly low, with a 6 pound sample burning about 11 hours. Ash production was very high. If you were using this charcoal in a ceramic cooker and doing a long overnight cook, you would want to be sure to clean out the ash before you start and perhaps even do a little ash management in the middle of the night.

If you are looking for this lump, you can find it in stores in Texas. So, due to low burntime and high ash production, it gets our Average rating.

Statements From The Bag

"Better Burning", "Burns Hotter, Longer, Cleaner", "100% Natural Hardwood Lump Charcoal", "Environmentally Friendly", "No Chemical Additives", "Texas Style"

"Through our unique process, we are able to rid our wood of most of the unwanted foreign material including resins and acids which are so commonly found in all of the major branded briquettes sold today. What remains is only coke and natural fiber, accounting for the subtle, natural flavor that foods capture when cooked with Chef-Wagon Hardwood Lump Charcoal. [Editor's note: This is a printing error. Corrected labels will say Expert's Choice.] That process has made it "the expert's choice for the outdoor barbequer" for many, many years."

"Burns Hotter and Longer", "100% Pure Hardwood Charcoal", "No Chemical Additives or Fillers", "Product of Argentina"

"Product Advantages

  • No other charcoal burns cleaner, hotter and longer than B&B Lump Charcoal.
  • Because it burns hotter and longer, it sears meat quicker locking in the natural flavor with the added bonus of saving you both time and money.
  • There are no chemical additives or fillers, just 100% pure hardwood charcoal. Making any food more flavorful and palatable.
  • Unlike charcoal briquettes which are quick charred, pulverized and pressed to dry, B&B Lump Charcoal is the healthier, wiser choice for the discriminating, expert barbecue chef."

    "Safety Instructions

  • Ensure the barbecue is positioned on a flat surface.
  • Never barbecue indoors or in a enclosed space.
  • Never move a lighted or hot barbecue and ensure the ashes have cooled before cleaning."

  • Lighting Instructions

    "Lighting Instructions
    using lighter fluid
    1. Place the charcoal in a pyramid shape in the center of the fire bowl and spray about a cup full of fluid on the charcoal.
    2. Wait about 1 minute and light the charcoal in several places.
    3. After 30 minutes or when an even thin layer of white ash by day, spread the charcoal out evenly across the fire bowl.
    4. Only commence cooking when flames have died down."
