Commentary
Upon opening the bag and emptying out on the ground, we were disappointed by the size distribution. There were no obvious large pieces at the top of the bag and when we sorted the contents, the poor size distribution was confirmed. There were no pieces you could call large, a small amount of medium-sized pieces, and mostly small-sized pieces. As the following table shows, a full 25% of the bag consisted of chips and dust:
The charcoal took 3.5 sheets of newspaper to start in our starter chimney test, which is about average. There was no real sparking or popping while we started the charcoal. However, when we used a MAPP torch there were some violent pops, so you need to be careful using a MAPP torch to start this charcoal.
While the charcoal burns there is a very pleasant mild woodsy smoke. We were able to get this charcoal up to a maximum temperature of 960 degrees, quite hot compared to many charcoals. Ash production was very low and the burn time was average.
So, considering the large amount (1/4 of the bag) of chips and dust (and no large pieces), this charcoal gets our Average rating.

This charcoal comes in 20- and 40-pound bags at a reasonable price. The bags have a nice touch: they have an easy opening paper strip which you pull to start the string unraveling. No need to cut the bag, just pull the strip. Nice.
We also found 1 small rock and a small, insignificant amount of uncarbonized wood.

"Lighting Instructions
Using a Charcoal Chimney is the prefered (sic) method of lighting charcoal. The chimney uses newspaper as a starter, it's very simple to use and gives food a natural BBQ flavor without an aftertaste.
1. In a clean grill, place the desired amount of charcoal in a pyrimid (sic) shaped pile.
2. Follow the directions on the starting fluid bottle for the proper amount of fluid to use. Add fluid to charcoal & light.
3. Allow fluid to completely burn off charcoal (about 10-15 minutes). Add more charcoal if desired & enjoy.
