It arrived in a well-packed box and looked to be in pristine condition. As you can see from the sorted piles, this charcoal was decidedly towards the small end of the scale. There were no pieces we could really call large, just medium and small. The bag contained about 12.5% chips and dust by weight, which seems to be about average for these hardwood charcoals. There was no scrap, 1 small dirt clod, and several small uncharred pieces. The charcoal was easy to light, taking 2 sheets of newspaper to start in our chimney starter test. It burns with a mild, pleasant smoke. We didn't have time to conduct a burn test, but we hope provide that information later. For now, we give this charcoal our Above Average rating. Tightly crumple or twist three or four sheets of newspaper and place these on the bottom of the grill below the bottom grate (dry twigs or kindling can be substituted for the newspaper." "2. Place three or four handfuls of charcoal on top of the grate. Try to leave 1 to 2 inches of air space between the paper and the charcoal." "3. Ignite the paper.
