Commentary

Car Wash Mike, who frequents the Big Green Egg forum, was kind enough to send me a 20 pound box of Chigger Creek lump for our review. Thanks, Mike! This is pretty good charcoal. It arrived in a box, which we like to see for charcoal shipped via United Pummeling, er, Parcel Service. However, we were surprised to see the amount of small chips and dust that we ended up with. (See photo below of sorted contents.) There wasn't a whole lot of waste, but it was more than we are used to seeing. The lump was easy to light and had a medium to strong smokey smell when it burned. The bag contained no scrap, no rocks, no funny stuff. It was primarily scraps from the lumber mill (not scraps from flooring, molding, etc.).

One comment about the box it was delivered in vs. the bag pictured above. I take it that Chigger Creek ships boxes and sells bags if you visit their location. Car Wash Mike sent me the photo of a bag that he purchased.

All in all, this lump is right up there with many of the better lump charcoals we have tested, so we give it our Recommended rating.
