Today Komodo Kamado Refractory Cookers announced a new product, Komodo Sustainable 100% Natural Wood Charcoal. From the announcement on their website we can deduce that this new charcoal is hardwood lump charcoal produced using "short rotation coppicing." Komodo Kamado claims the new charcoal will be environmentally friendly, have no fillers or additives, a mild smoke flavor, burns clean, very hot and very long. Below is a photograph of a sample of the charcoal, taken from their website:
From information provided by the manufacturer, short rotation coppicing involves cutting stems and branches from trees on a 5-10 year cycle and waste wood from fallen mature trees. Coppicers are thus able to harvest fuel from a forest without destroying it. We have also been told that this new charcoal will be vacuum packed to prevent any breakage from handling during shipping. Komodo Kamado Refractory Cookers has been manufacturing kamado-style cookers in Surabaya, Indonesia and shipping them world wide for four years.
